Clair de Lune

When we first talked about the idea of bringing a piano into a cave of water, you can bet most people thought we were crazy. Add scuba diving in said cave in massive long gowns, and most artists and crew would be out. But not us…we wanted to take it on in order to bring one of the most beautiful pieces of classical music to life. It felt like we were playing under moonlight, and the added slight movement of the water created an ambience to the music that was unforgettable. Along with Claude Debussy, we too were inspired by Paul Verlaine’s poem, “Clair de Lune.” The poetry completely sets the mood; a mood that we hope to also bring to life in our own “fountains sobbing ecstasy.”  The english translation is as follows:

Your soul is a chosen landscape
Where charming masqueraders and bergamaskers go
Playing the lute and dancing and almost
Sad beneath their fanciful disguises.

All sing in a minor key
Of victorious love and the opportune life,
They do not seem to believe in their happiness
And their song mingles with the moonlight,

With the still moonlight, sad and beautiful,
That sets the birds dreaming in the trees
And the fountains sobbing in ecstasy,
The tall slender fountains among marble statues.
